The San Diego United Lions Club (SDULC) hosted a 5K Walk-A-Thon on Sunday, March 10, 2019. The event, held at Lake Miramar, began at 9:00am in the morning under clear, crisp skies, and the sun glistening off the lake. What started out as a cool 51 degrees at 8:00am during set-up, after a week of rain, turned out to be a warm 65 degrees at the start of the event…”real jackets not required!”
Even having experienced daylight savings time with the clocks turned forward early Sunday morning, participants, Lions, and citizens of the community arrived at the bright blue Lion Banner waving in the breeze with big smiles, cups of hot coffee, and even a box of snicker doodles to share. We were also joined by two RNs, and several CPR certified personnel who volunteered their time to keep us safe throughout the special event. What a great community of “leaders” who lead by example –
After a short pep talk, a few photos, and an invitation to join the Lions as members, the group “hit the path” that would lead us in the direction of our 5K goal. The goal, of course, was to raise money to purchase art and craft items for children at Rady Children’s Hospital undergoing treatment for either cancer or diabetes. Therapists use the art creativity process to help explore and manage a variety of emotions, changing life patterns, and improve self-esteem as children experience daily challenges in the medical environment. Each Lion solicited a sponsor(s) who pledged to support the Lion if they succeeded in completing the whole 5K walk around the lake. Good cause, good exercise!
By 10:30am, everyone who walked or ran, had completed the 5K. The SDULC raised over $500+ to purchased arts/crafts for kids undergoing treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital, also setting the example toward a healthier lifestyle that includes exercise for better health. It was uplifting to see every single walker or runner come across the finish line with smiles and laughter sharing how happy they were to join us for a good cause in a beautiful setting. Good job everyone! See you next year –
